    • Who are First Aid Awards?

The First Aid for Mental Health qualification is approved and administered by First Aid Awards (FAA). FAA is an awarding body, regulated by The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual). Ofqual is responsible for overseeing all public qualifications in England

What do the Levels of a Qualification Mean?

      • All qualifications in adult education (Aged 16+) are part of the Regulated Qualifications Framework in England (RQF). This is a structure which is overseen by Ofqual. As the diagram opposite shows, there are 8 Levels of qualification within this structure, from Entry Level through to Level 8. There is a similar structure in Scotland called the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF).
      • Qualifications are work-based or vocationally-related or academic. Our First Aid for Mental Health courses are both work-based and vocationally-related. This means that they are relevant in the workplace and also could lead to a vocation or profession, for example in Counselling, or Psychology or Psychiatry.
      • The First Aid for Mental Health qualifications we offer are at Level 2 and Level 3.
      • Level 2 is equivalent to GCSE, BTEC First Diploma and an NVQ Level 2 Apprenticeship.
      • Level 3 is equivalent to A-Level, a BTEC Certificate or Diploma and an NVQ Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship.
      • The Level of a qualification tells you how demanding the course or training is. The Levels go up to Level 8, equivalent to a Doctorate. An Honours Degree is Level 6.

      What is the 'Qualification Specification'?

Click on image to download Qualification Specification for

Level 3 Supervising First Aid for Mental Health

FAA Level 3 Supervising First Aid for Mental Health

      • The Qualification Specification is all the information about the qualification. The example is opposite is from the FAA Level 3 Award in Supervising First Aid for Mental Health which we offer. If you would find it easier to read a hard copy of the qualification, you can download a pdf by clicking on the image opposite.
Here are the definitions of what the terms and abbreviations used in the specification mean:
      • Mandatory unit: This qualification consists of one unit which is compulsory.
      • QAN: Qualifications and Accreditation Number. This is the number given to all Ofqual regulated qualifications to identify it.
      • URN:  Unique Reference Number. Another way of identifying the qualification.
      • Credit value: In adult education, it is possible to build a qualification by putting credits together for courses you have studied. This qualification is worth 1 credit. If, for example, you were building credits for a degree in education, this course might count towards it.  The degree will specify which courses count towards it. In our example, a course in motor vehicle maintenance would not count towards an education degree, as it is not relevant.
      • Level:  See previous section. The Level of difficulty of this qualification is 3, equivalent to A-Level.
      • GLH: Guided Learning Hours. This is the minimum number of hours of contact between you and your tutor. In this qualification, it is 12.
      • TQT:  Total Qualification Time.  This is the number of hours, including GLH, that you will spend on learning. In this qualification, it is 14. You are, therefore, expected to spend a minimum of 2 hours in unsupervised independent learning.
      • Certification:  How long the qualification lasts. All First Aid for Mental Health courses last for 3 years and then expire. The full course needs to be taken again at the end of 3 years to requalify. This is because practices in mental health are likely to change during the 3 years. The same rule applies to physical First Aid. Annual refresher courses are also recommended.
      • Progression:  These are suggestions for what other courses this course might lead to an/or what other courses/occupations might be relevant to it.

What do the terms 'Learning Outcomes' and 'Assessment Criteria' mean?

Click on image to download Qualification Specification for

Level 3 Supervising First Aid for Mental Health

All regulated qualifications have learning outcomes and assessment criteria, as shown in the image of Page 3 of our Level 3 course in Supervising First Aid for Mental Health. If you would find it easier to read a hard copy of the qualification, you can download a pdf by clicking on the image.

      • Learning outcomes or LOs: Describe the skills and knowledge a learner will gain by successfully completing the qualification.
      • Assessment criteria: The skills, knowledge and competence a learner will be required to demonstrate during the course assessment to pass the course and be awarded the qualification.
      • You will see that the 7 Learning Outcomes are matched with 7 Assessment Criteria.
      • Let's take Learning Outcome 1 as an example. In order for the learner to know what mental health is, why people develop mental ill-health and the role of a First Aider for Mental Health, the learner has to be able to:
      1.1 Define mental health
1.2 Understand what stigma means in relation to mental health
1.3 Identify factors that can lead to mental ill-health
1.4 Understand the role of a First Aider for Mental Health

All Assessment Criteria have to be achieved to a good standard to achieve the qualification.

FAA Level 3 Award in Supervising First Aid for Mental Health

      How will I be assessed?

In a face-to-face course, you would take a written test of one hour. During Covid-19, you will have an oral test via video conferencing with your tutor lasting around 60 minutes. There is no grading of the qualification - there is only Pass or Fail. If you fail, you will be given an opportunity to retake the oral test. We will give you guidance on how to prepare for the oral test.

You describe your trainers as 'NUCO trained'. What does that mean?

Suneta is a former headteacher, with a career spanning over 20 years in Primary schools, as a teacher, SENDCo and senior leader. She is also a Fellow of the Chartered College. Suneta is an accredited coach and supports the wellbeing and mental health of teachers and school leaders, both individually and within the school context. Suneta has bereavement counselling qualifications and is a First Aid for Mental Health Instructor, accredited by NUCO through the Awarding Body First Aid Awards (FAA). Sunetal is also a Mindfulness Trainer. She is director of Cultivate Coaching & Consultancy and founder of the Every Teacher Matters Project.

Steve has over 40 years’ experience in secondary education, including as Head of Drama, Head of English, Assistant Principal and a local authority consultant with a School Improvement team. He is a Founding Fellow of the Chartered College and an elected member of council. Steve is also a qualified Counsellor (BAC) and is a First Aid for Mental Health Instructor, accredited by NUCO through the Awarding Body First Aid Awards (FAA). As Founder and CEO of the Teach Well Alliance, Steve works in partnership with schools to implement a culture of staff wellbeing and mental health through his unique programme, the Teach Well Toolkit.

NUCO Training Ltd was founded in 1998. It is a provider of adult courses (Mainly 18+). Originally, it was a First Aid provider for physical health and built an excellent training reputation in this field.

It also now offers a range of FAA qualifications in First Aid for Mental Health. One of the qualifications it offers is the FAA Level 3 Instructor Award in Supervising First Aid for Mental Health. This course can only be studied by qualified teachers.

Suneta Bagri and Steve Waters, your trainers, are both experienced teachers. They both achieved the qualification and are now able to offer NUCO's full range of First Aid for Mental Health courses.

You can remind yourself of the courses we offer by scrolling back up this page.

I have seen other First Aid for Mental Health courses advertised.

      Why should I book yours?

There are three reasons why you should book our First Aid for Mental Health courses for your school or college

      1. We only use qualified First Aid for Mental Health Instructors who are also teachers. We understand what schools and colleges require of their First Aid for Mental Health staff. We can tailor courses to your needs. We are also able to offer the unique Student Wellbeing and Mental Health Ambassador training course in addition to our accredited qualifications.

      2. There are other good providers of mental health courses who have a good reputation. However, their qualifications are often not Ofqual regulated and they issue their own certificates. Our certificates are issued by FAA, an awarding body, are nationally accredited and part of the RQF framework of qualifications.

      3. Steve Waters is also a qualified BAC Counsellor and Suneta Bagri is a Bereavement Counsellor. Suneta and Steve have excellent knowledge and understanding of the causes and treatment of mental ill-health. They use their mental health qualifications to enhance the First Aid for Mental Health courses they offer to schools and colleges.

'How can they train to be Student Wellbeing and Mental Health Ambassadors and

gain an accredited Level 2 qualification in First Aid for Mental Health (FAMH)?'

Your pupils take an additional one-day course in First Aid for Mental Health (FAMH).

The FAMH qualification takes one day - 6 hours.

It is awarded by NUCO and accredited by the Ofqual regulated awarding body First Aid Awards (FAA).

If a student attends for 6 hours and participates in all the activities, they will pass.

As with physical First Aid, this course is not examined on academic ability.

There are 3 routes to take the addtional one-day FAMH course

      Route 1

If students are 14 when they undertake Student Wellbeing and Mental Health Ambassador training, they take the FAMH Level 2 qualification the following day. We strongly suggest that this is the most effective route, as the first day of Wellbeing and Mental Health Ambassador training is fresh in the pupils' minds.

      Route 2

If you can’t arrange for students to take the FAMH Level 2 qualification the following day, you can book another date (See our timetable of courses below). This would also be an option if your pupils were not 14 when they underwent Student Wellbeing and Mental Health Ambassador training but became 14 during the same academic year.

      Route 3

Students take the course alongside members of staff, either the following day after the Student Wellbeing and Mental Health Ambassador course, or at a later date. A customised quotation will be provided if you choose this route; the fee for staff is based on the cost of an individual place, whereas the fee for students is a flat course fee.

If you wish to enter pupils for the First Aid for Mental Health extra qualification, let us know when you book.

The cost is £450 (No VAT) per course.

Please note: If you also wish to enter your Student Wellbeing and Mental Health Ambassadors for the First Aid in Mental Health qualification, the maximum number we can train is 16.

      What is Mindfulness?

      Jon Kabat-Zinn

Jon Kabat-Zinn, a world expert, has defined Mindfulness as:

'The awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally. By focusing on the breath, the idea is to cultivate attention on the body and mind as it is moment to moment, and so help with pain, both physical and emotional.'

Jon Kabat-Zinn is American professor Emeritus of Medicine and the creator of the Stress Reduction Clinic and the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He is a recognised world expert in Mindfulness.

Mindfulness is a proven way of improving wellbeing

In 2011, Google developed its own Mindfulness employee programme called

      'Search Inside Yourself'.

There is a 6-month waiting list to join the course.

      What Mindfulness is Not!

      Mindfulness is not:

      • A religion
      • A cult
      • Accompanied by strange rituals
While it is often described as Mindfulness meditation, it does not:
      • Have to be practised in a silent space
      • Have to be accompanied by sounds
      • Need you to be sitting in a specific position
Think of Mindfulness as a way of relaxing and reducing your stress levels. You can learn how to practise Mindfulness very quickly, anywhere. Although you gain more benefit from Mindfulness if you practise it regularly, it is entirely up to you how often you do so.

'It doesn’t matter where or how you develop mindfulness. Doesn’t matter why. Doesn’t even matter what you do: meditation, yoga, prayer, therapy, gratitude, science-help practices, hiking, painting, exercise, etc. It’s all good.'

      • Are you considering leaving teaching?

        Or have you already left?

Perhaps you had to escape a toxic environment?

Or you just had had enough?

Or you retired after a lifetime in education?

        Or you wanted a change?

        Or you were made redundant?

Whatever the reason, you are experiencing a major life-event, a change like no other. It may be a welcome change, a relief, but it requires a major adjustment.

If you are the only person to have left teaching in your social circle, you might be experiencing isolation.

After being surrounded by people, you might be now feeling alone, making decisions by yourself and struggling to make sense of your new life.

        Online course: 20th November 2020

Live Well After Teaching, hosted by the Teach Well Alliance, will give you the space to consider your options and to share your experiences with other teachers

        in the same position.

Your trainers, Steve Waters and Jayne McCallum,

have experienced what you are going through.

They know what it is like to leave teaching and to start a new life.

Steve has over 45 years’ experience in secondary education, with 30 years teaching experience, including as Head of Drama, Head of English and Assistant Principal. When subsequently working for a Local Authority School Improvement Team, Steve was made redundant after 6 years. He had never worked outside the education service and knew nothing about business or the commercial world. After following many different paths, he founded the Teach Well Alliance in 2018. As Founder and CEO of the Teach Well Alliance, Steve works in partnership with schools to implement a culture of staff wellbeing and mental health through his unique programme, the Teach Well Toolkit.

Steve is a Founding Fellow of the Chartered College and an elected member of council. Steve is also a qualified Counsellor (BAC) and an Ofqual regulated First Aid for Mental Health Instructor, accredited by NUCO through the Awarding Body First Aid Awards (FAA).

Steve's principal partner is Suneta Bagri, a former primary headteacher from the Midlands, who runs the Every Teacher Matters network and is founder of Cultivate Coaching, a wellbeing coaching service for teachers.

For the first ten years of her career Jayne was an English teacher, including as Head of English in a high performing secondary school in the West Midlands. She subsequently worked in the school improvement sector for seventeen years, providing high quality, school-based consultancy to raise standards across a range of curriculum areas. She then joined a Local Authority Advisory Service, diversifying into a generic learning and teaching advisor. More recently, Jayne is works for a Multi Academy Trust with schools across the UK.

Jayne’s passion is people! Training and Coaching is at the heart of what she does: supporting colleagues to be the best they can be, to be happy and fulfilled and enjoy a happy work/life balance. She knows only too well from her own career path and recent experience of redundancy how challenging it can be to pursue a fulfilling career in education outside of the classroom. Jayne is an Ofqual regulated First Aid for Mental Health Instructor, accredited by NUCO through the Awarding Body First Aid Awards (FAA) and is an Associate Consultant with the Teach Well Alliance.

The Live Well After Teaching course will:

Explore the emotional and social impact of leaving teaching.

Draw on recognised processes of occupational change to provide a

        positive framework for taking action.

Identify the many strengths and skills you used in teaching which you will use in your new life.

Enable you to plan your next steps, wherever you are in your journey.

Provide resources you can use to support you on a dedicated member-only web page.

Create a support group which you will be able to access after the course.

6 weeks later you will be invited to a free one hour webinar to share your experiences since attending the course.
